Grand track and field takes second at Nyle Norris Invitational

The Grand County High School track and field team won the boys division and took third in the girls division for an overall second place finish at the Nyle Norris Invitational in Richfield on Friday, April 27, while on Monday, April 30, the Lady Red Devils golf team placed third at the Region 15 Championship tournament.

In Richfield, the Red Devil boys scored 137 points to outpace the host Wildcats’ 106 with Emery in third at 69 points. Richfield won the girls division with 125.833 points, ahead of Panguitch in second at 74 points and Grand in third at 68 points.

For the boys, sophomore Eli Hazlett starred in the shorter distance races, placing first in the 400-meter race at 50.01, second in the 100-meter race at 11.42 and third in the 200-meter race at 22.80. Junior Stacy Randall was right behind him, taking third in the 100-meters at 11.62 and fourth in the 200-meters at 23.17. Randall was also part of the first-place team in the 4×100-meter relay, joining junior Connor Guerrero, senior Dakota Johnson and freshman Dante Wells for a 45.30. Guerrero and Johnson both ran the 300-meter hurdles, taking second and third, respectively, as Guerrero ran a 41.57 and Johnson ran a 41.85.

In the longer distances for the boys, senior Ryan Lewis placed second in both the 800- and 1600-meter races, running the 800 in 2:08.96 and the 1600 in 4:34.07. Sophomore Evan Ellison placed fourth in the 1600 at 4:52.91 and sophomore Malachi Ricks placed third in the 3200 meters at 10:58.59 and ninth in the 1600-meters at 5:00.38.

In the field, Johnson placed first in the javelin with a 148-foot, 6.5-inch throw, followed by sophomore Trea Meyer in fourth at 136 feet, 10 inches. Junior Jarom Shumway placed second in the shot put at 42 feet, 8.75 inches and third in the discus at 123 feet, 3.5 inches. Sophomore Jayden Dowd placed foruth in the high jump at 5 feet, 10 inches and junior Nolan Ramirez placed seventh in the long jump at 18 feet, 5.5 inches.

The girls were led by freshman Kylah Ricks, who placed first in the 3200-meters at 12:35.04, second in the 1600-meters at 5:32.24 and third in the 800-meters at 2:35.74. Junior Auburn Jackman placed seventh in the 200-meters at 28.69 and freshman Anika Scherer placed seventh in the 1600-meters at 5:55.99. Jackman, Scherer, freshman Emree Olsen and senior Hannah Stripeika placed third in the 4×400-meter relay at 4:41.53.

In the field, junior Veda Gritts won the discus with a 109-foot, 10-inch throw. She also placed fifth in the shot put at 31 feet, 9.75 inches; and fifth in the javelin at 92 feet, 1 inch. Junior Shane Stroder placed sixth in the shot put at 31 feet, 5 inches; and seventh in the discus at 90 feet, 7 inches. Senior Reagan Paxman placed ninth in the shot put at 30 feet, 5.25 inches, and junior Annabelle Garrett placed third in the high jump at 4 feet, 11 inches.

The track and field team is scheduled to compete at the Brigham Young University Invitational on Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5, in Provo.

On Monday, April 30, the Grand girls golf team place third in the Region 15 Championships at the Carbon Country Club in Price. For the season, Richfield scored 1,785 points, Emery scored 2,213 points and Grand scored 2,293 points. Manti was fourth with 2,368, followed by South Sevier with 2,410, San Juan with 2,469 and North Sanpete with 2,834. Joopy Bamrungmuang placed fifth and Annie Kopell placed 10th in the individual standings. The Lady Red Devils will compete the UHSAA Utah State 3A girls golf championships on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 8 and 9, in Richfield.

The Red Devil boys soccer team lost 2-0 on the road versus Richfield on Tuesday, April 24, before rebounding to win the home finale 1-0 over South Sevier on Thursday, April 26, with the only goal of the game scored by senior Deklynd Chant. The Red Devils finished the regular season with a 5-5 region record, earning a berth in the playoffs and a road match at Morgan on Thursday, May 3, at 4 p.m.

In boys tennis, The Red Devils played San Juan on Tuesday, April 24, and Richfield and South Sevier on Thursday, April 26. Grand defeated the Broncos 3-2 with Elton Kunze-Jones, Cody Johnston and Kai Wainer all winning their singles matches. Grand is scheduled to compete in the Region 15 Championship tournament on Friday, May 4.
