Red Devils have rough week

The Grand County High School spring sports teams did not enjoy much success this week, suffering defeats in baseball, softball and boys soccer in head-to-head competition, while the girls golf team finished second in Region 15 competition at the Skyline Mountain Resort.

The Lady Red Devils suffered a 15-4 loss to Carbon on Tuesday, March 20, after an 11-run fourth inning by the Lady Dinos enabled them to pull away and enact the mercy rule after the conclusion of the fifth inning. The baseball team didn’t fare much better at Union on Thursday, March 22, falling behind 5-0 after one inning as senior Alec Williams had a rough start on the mound, giving up three hits and walking three batters in his only inning of work. The Red Devils also had a disastrous third inning, giving up seven unearned runs to fall behind 12-0. Overall, the Grand pitching staff gave up nine walks in addition to the Red Devils committing three errors defensively.

The Red Devils scored three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning. Senior Josh Jones went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two runs scored, while senior Gage Hansen hit a two-RBI double in his only official at-bat despite four plate appearances.

The Red Devils rebounded to defeat Summit Academy in a road game on Monday, March 26. They also defeated North Summit 25-3 on Tuesday, March 27, in Coalville. The team was scheduled to play a road game against Providence Hall on Wednesday, March 28.

The Red Devils return to action following the break on Tuesday, April 3, at 3:30 p.m. against South Sevier in Monroe, while the softball team plays at Richfield in a double header on Wednesday, April 4, at 2 and 4 p.m.

Williams was also named to the 3A All-State third team in boys basketball, along with junior Cameron Hoppensteadt, while senior Masen Ward, the winning pitcher against Summit Academy, earned honorable mention for his performance during the basketball season. In girls basketball, junior Veda Gritts earned honorable mention

The boys soccer team found itself on the wrong end of a 2-1 score against North Sanpete on Thursday, March 22, falling to 2-2 so far this season. The Red Devils return to action on the home pitch against Richfield on Thursday, April 5, at 4 p.m.

The girls golf team played at the Skyline Mountain Resort, hosted by North Sanpete, on Thursday, March 22, placing second with 219 points to Richfield’s 182 points. Region 15 returns to Cove View, this time hosted by South Sevier, on Tuesday, April 3, at 11 a.m. The boys tennis team wasn’t in action this week, and also returns to action in the Sevier Valley on April 3, playing a double header at Richfield and at South Sevier.
