Boys soccer team shuts out Emery

The Grand County High School boys soccer team earned a 1-0 victory at home over the Emery Spartans on Tuesday, March 13, improving to 1-1 in the early-going of the season. Jose Tavares was Grand’s goal scorer, while Jacob Shumway manned the net for the shutout.

The Red Devils were also scheduled to play Manti in Moab on Tuesday, March 20, and travel to Coalville to play North Summit in non-region action on Thursday, March 22. Grand returns to the home pitch after Spring Break against San Juan on Tuesday, April 3, at 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Lady Red Devils softball team went 2-3 in tournament play in St. George on Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17. On Friday, the Lady Red Devils lost 18-1 to Desert Hills and 10-0 to Skyline, Idaho, before finding the win column with an 18-5 showing against Lincoln County, Nevada.

In their first game Saturday, Grand only took five innings to dispatch Beaver 18-6, hitting several home runs in the game and scoring 11 runs in the second inning alone. In the afternoon game, however, the Lady Red Devils lost 11-9 to Rigby, Idaho, in a back-and-forth game that Grand led most of the way. Grand was scheduled to host Carbon on Tuesday, March 20. The Lady Red Devils return from Spring Break at Richfield for a double header on Wednesday, April 4, at 2 and 4 p.m.

The girls golf team placed third in Region 15 in Richfield on Wednesday, March 14, scoring 231 Stableford points to finish behind host Richfield at 173 and Emery at 218. Region 15 was scheduled to play again at North Sanpete on Thursday, March 22, before returning to the Cove View course in Richfield, this time hosted by South Sevier on Tuesday, April 3, at 11 a.m.

The boys tennis team lost a pair of matches in St. George on Saturday, March 17, falling to Granger 3-2 and Bear River 3-2. Winning against Granger were Elton Jones and Kai Wainer in No. 1 doubles, and Braxten Pierce and Jamey Mascaro in No. 2 doubles. Against Bear River, Jones won in No. 1 singles and Wainer won in No. 3 singles.

On Friday, March 16, the Red Devils lost 4-1 to Murray, but beat Cedar City 3-2. Jones played No. 1 singles against Murray, winning 6-3, 6-0 for Grand’s lone point. Against Cedar, Wainer won in No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-1, while Pierce and Hayden Lance won No. 1 doubles 6-3, 6-3; and Kasey Kemp and Cody Johnston won No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-3.

The boys tennis team returns to action in road matches against Richfield and South Sevier on Tuesday, April 3, at 11 a.m., and 3 p.m.

The Red Devils track team wasn’t in action before the press deadline this week, as they were scheduled to run at Emery on Tuesday afternoon, March 20. Grand runs at the Blue Mountain Invitational in Blanding on Saturday, March 24, beginning at 9 a.m.
