Red Devils begin spring sports this week

The Grand County High School spring sports season gets underway this week for every sport except boys tennis. The track and field team hosts competition for the only time this season on Saturday, March 10, while the boys soccer team also plays at home this week.

The Red Rock Invitational begins at 9 a.m., on Saturday with teams from all over the region descending upon Moab. The Red Devils are coming off a seventh-place finish in the boys division and a 15th-place finish in the girls division in 2A last season. Both teams should finish higher this year, with the boys making a more significant climb in Grand’s first season in 3A.

The boys soccer team will play in 3A Region 15 against five other schools: Emery, Manti, North Sanpete, Richfield and South Sevier. Grand went 6-6-1 last season in the 2A Central division, just missing out on a playoff berth. This year’s Red Devils were scheduled to begin play on Wednesday, March 7, at home versus Waterford in non-region competition. They play host to Emery on Tuesday, March 13, at 4 p.m.

The girls golf team was also scheduled to begin play at home on Wednesday, March 7. They next compete at Cove View in Richfield on Wednesday, March 14, at 11 a.m. Unable to find a coach for the season, golf pro Rob Jones will act as the skills coach, while Athletic Director Ron Dolphin will be the “game day coach,” Dolphin said.

The Lady Red Devils softball team begins this season unranked after going 14-10 last season, placing second in 2A East with a 7-3 region mark. Grand has been playing 3A and 4A competition in non-region play for years, easing the transition to 3A. The Lady Red Devils, who return three seniors, begin competition at a tournament in St. George on Friday and Saturday, March 9 and 10.

The boys tennis team will be the last of Grand’s spring sports teams to begin play, waiting an extra week before competing in the Duel in the Desert in St. George on Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17.

All-State teams from winter sports will likely be announced in the coming weeks, but Academic All-State recipients have already been announced. Representing Grand County High School as an Academic All-Stater is Tyler Moreau from the boys swimming team. Only seniors are eligible for Academic All-State and are nominated by coaches and athletic directors.
