Count me in as a Rebel

Dear Editor:

In the 1970s and 1980s, Ray Tibbetts was a key player in the Sagebrush Rebellion, when Moab residents protested what they saw as overreaching control of Western U.S. lands. Ray’s local efforts sparked national reforms.

Today, Arches for the People carries on the mantle of Ray Tibbetts, “Keeper of the Land,” who was instrumental in setting the boundaries of Canyonlands National Park.

We are not going to help you establish our national parks, then have you tell us we can’t visit because you have not taken the time to come up with innovative transportation solutions.

People visit national parks; cars don’t.

Ronald Reagan, in August 1980, at a campaign speech in Salt Lake City said, “I happen to be one who cheers and supports the Sagebrush Rebellion. Count me in as a Rebel.”

We are the Rebels of the Sagebrush Rebellion 2.0. This time, our tools are not bulldozers, but instead are iPhones, Apps and self-driving vehicles.

Hashtag #resist.

Count me in as a Rebel.
