Lady Red Devils struggle in Sevier Valley

The Grand County High School girls basketball team ran out of gas against the Richfield Lady Wildcats in a 51-32 loss on Friday, Jan. 12, before struggling mightily against the press defense in a 75-34 loss to South Sevier on Saturday, Jan. 13. With the pair of losses, the Lady Red Devils fall to 6-7 overall, 2-2 in Region 15 play.

Coach Randy Martin said he was proud of the way the girls played, particularly against Richfield.

“It was a great game on Friday,” he said. “Halfway through the third quarter we were only down six points.”

Martin said the Lady Red Devils didn’t have the depth to sustain their level of play versus the Lady Wildcats.

“They hung in there as long as they could,” he said, noting that Richfield’s basketball court is college-sized, about eight feet longer than Grand’s home court. “Our problem is depth – we just don’t have enough players.”

Grand was led by a trio of juniors as Hannah Owen scored 11 points, Veda Gritts scored nine points and Annabelle Garrett scored seven points.

The following afternoon, Grand fell prey to the half-court trap of South Sevier, turning the ball over for easy shots throughout the majority of the contest, beginning in the second quarter, Martin said.

“(South Sevier) scored 29 points in the second quarter and for all intents and purposes, it was over after that,” he said.

Grand was scheduled to play at Emery on Tuesday, Jan. 16, a match-up similar to the one Grand faced against the Lady Rams, Martin said. Grand hosts rival San Juan on Friday, Jan. 19, at 4 p.m., an early start time because former Columbine High School Principal Frank DeAngelis is speaking in the auditorium at 6 p.m.

Martin said he thinks Grand matches up well with the Lady Broncos.

“We have a height advantage that will really help us out,” he said. “Looking at them on tape, they don’t trap as well as the other teams we face. Back in early November when we sat down to discuss our goals, one of our goals was to beat our biggest region rival, and that’s San Juan.”
