Grand swimmers compete in Cedar City

The Grand County High School boys and girls swim teams competed at the Cedar City Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10 and 11, gaining experience in a large meet against large schools. The boys placed 11th and the girls placed 13th.

Grand’s boys scored 34 points, and the girls scored 24 points. Braxten Pierce was the star of the meet for the Red Devils, placing third in the 100-yard freestyle at 52.29, and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:56.24. He was also part of the fifth-place 200-yard freestyle relay team along with Corbin Arbon, Alex Lacy and Conner Ainge, finishing at 1:43.40; and the 400-yard freestyle relay with Lacy, Tyler Moreau and Ainge, placing 12th at 4:01.69.

Ainge and Lacy also had strong individual showings. Ainge placed 26th in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:16.31 and 17th in the 500-yard freestyle at 6:25.51. Lacy placed 21st in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:10.34 and 28th in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:41.37.

Moreau placed 25th in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:16.04 and 37th in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:29.42. Arbon joined Cody Johnston, Dallin Stucki and Preston Barlow to finish 14th in the 200-yard medley relay at 2:09.54, shaving almost nine seconds off their entry time.

Trayken Robertson and Nathan Shafer also had good showings. Robertson placed 28th in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:19.08 and 52nd in the 50-yard freestyle at 28.53. Shafer placed 26th in the 500-yard freestyle at 7:15.68 and 43rd in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:33.80.

For the girls, Mary and Kiersten Kimmerle and Brooklin Hugentobler were the strongest performers. Mary Kimmerle swam the 50-yard freestyle in sixth place at 27.03 and the 500-yard freestyle in 12th place at 6:14.29. Kiersten Kimmerle swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 30th at 1:33.32 and the 100-yard freestyle in 37th at 1:12.16. Hugentobler swam the 50-yard freestyle in 40th at 31:14 and the 100-yard freestyle in 42nd at 1:13.27.

The Kimmerles, Hugentobler and Corrie Kause swam the 200-yard freestyle relay, placing 12th at 2:09.46, more than 12 seconds ahead of their entry time. Individually, Kause swam to 41st place in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:30.14 and to 54th in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:59.91.

Kiersten Kimmerle joined Grace Johnston, Kyla Jackman and Neelie Relph to place 15th in the 200-yard medley relay at 2:40.23. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Mary Kimmerle, Relph, Josie Wakefield and Johnston combined for a 12th-place 5:14.44.

Former Lady Red Devil London Richards, now competing for host Cedar City High School, placed third individually in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:11.38, seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:18.38, and was a part of the first place 200-yard medley relay team that swam a 1:59.48.

The Red Devils swim teams were also scheduled to compete at Emery in a dual on Tuesday, Nov. 14. They’re scheduled to host Gunnison, Millard and Carbon on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 3:30 p.m.

The Grand County High School boys and girls basketball teams begin play this week, shifting winter sports into full swing. The boys open on the road versus Union on Tuesday, Nov. 21, before returning home to play Green River on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m., in their home opener. The girls play Green River at home on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. The wrestling team joins the fray on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m., at Monticello. The Devilettes Drill team doesn’t compete until Dec. 9 at the Salt Lake Valley Classic in Draper.
