Greed is the name of the game

I am adamantly opposed to a new USU-Moab campus and the Lionsback Resort, as well as all the other major developments being shoved down our throats.

The USU campus is now a ridiculous proposal considering what is going on in Moab. We are being completely overrun with tourists and we want to add a university and the potential of thousands of students to the mix? Really?

Then Lionsback … an outrageous development that will:

1) totally clog the roads on the east side of town even further than they already are;

2) create a very dangerous traffic problem;

3) possibly contaminate our water supplies.

Are we at the mercy of SITLA’s bullying and threatening, of developers whining about codes and fencing and claiming we need all of this development, all the while talking about Moab like it is a commodity?

Greed is the name of the game in Moab. Greed has set its evil eye on this place, resulting in our community being ruined by it. “Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of a cancer cell,” said Ed Abbey so clearly. “It was not curiosity that killed the goose who laid the golden egg, but an insatiable greed that devoured common sense.” — E.A. Bucchianeri.

I am totally disgusted and heartbroken by what this formerly peaceful valley is being turned into. Grow, grow, grow. Build, build, build. This valley cannot take the amount of growth that is being forced on it. The infrastructure can’t. The roads can’t. And then there is the elephant in the room … there isn’t enough water.

It is unbelievably sad this is happening to Moab. Moab deserves better. The land deserves better. All who live here (humans and the natural world) deserve better than endless and unfettered growth. It is the death knell for Moab. I implore all who love this place to take a stand, get involved and tell the councils, SITLA and the state to stop this madness.
