Sons of the American Legion Commander David Swafford (left), American Legion Auxiliary Unit 54 President Debbie Swafford (third from left) and American Legion Post 54 Commander Ron Irvin presented an Award of Merit to Grand County High School senior Jayelen Knowles on Thursday, Dec. 15.

Knowles was one of just 10 students nationwide to receive a $20,000 Samsung American Legion Scholarship in 2016.

Samsung launched the scholarship in 1996 as a show of appreciation for U.S. veterans who served in the Korean War.
