Track and field teams compete in Blanding

The Lady Red Devils dominated short to medium distances in running events and also had winners in two throwing events on their way to a team first-place finish at the Blue Mountain Invitational in Blanding on Saturday, April 23.

Grand scored 190 points, just edging out Carbon’s 178. Host San Juan was a distant third at 137 points. The Lady Red Devils had three top-four finishers in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter races. Senior Kwincey Wells placed first in the 100-meters at 14.45, followed in second by sophomore Baelie Pierce at 14.60 and in fourth by junior Megan Pfnister at 14.93. Pierce won the 200-meter race at 30.06, followed by junior Alexa Pierce in second at 30.64 and sophomore McKenna Johnson in fourth at 30.66. Freshman Auburn Jackman won the 400-meter race at 1:06.25, followed by Alexa Pierce in second at 1:06.90 and Johnson in third at 1:09.47.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Wells finished second at 54.94 and Pfnister finished third at 56.58.

In throwing events, senior Britnee Lewis won the shot put at 32 feet, 2 inches; and junior Halli Stocks won the discus at 99 feet, 2 inches.

The girls also won the 4×100-meter relay and the 4×400-meter relay races. The 4×100 team of Pfnister, sophomore Abby Mason, Johnson and Baelie Pierce ran a 54.08; in the 4×400, Pfnister, Jackman, Alexa Pierce and Johnson ran a 4:51.00. Mason also placed third in the long jump at 13 feet, 10 inches

The Grand boys finished third with 99.5 points as host San Juan won with 171.5 points and Monticello placed second with 113 points.

Freshman Connor Guerrero won the 300-meter hurdles at 48.09; he was followed by fellow freshman Jarom Shumway in second place at 49.52. Shumway also placed third in the 110-meter hurdles at 18.65, third in the 300-meter hurdles at 49.52, fourth in the shot put at 34 feet, 1 inch and fifth in the discus at 82 feet, 3.5 inches.

Freshman Trent Elmore placed third in the 400-meters at 55.84 and fourth in the 200-meters at 25.48. Fellow freshman Teddy Park posted a third-place finish in the high jump at 5 feet, 6 inches.

The Red Devils’ next meet is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, in Price at the Eastern Utah Farm Bureau Championship invitational, after which they compete at the BYU Invitational on May 6-7, the Region 15 Championships on Tuesday, May 10, and the state championships on May 20-21.
