3 on 3 for the T-Birds

Grand County Middle School will play host to the second-annual GCMS Thunderbirds 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday, July 18. The tournament is a fundraiser for the GCMS boys basketball teams to help with costs such as equipment, uniforms, travel costs and officiating, coach and tournament organizer Conrad Yanito said.

Yanito said the inaugural event last year had about 30 teams total. There are U10, U14 and U18 divisions for both boys and girls. U10 is for players who will be in either fifth or sixth grade this fall, U14 is for seventh- and eighth-graders, and U18 is for those who will be in high school. There is also a family division where parents can play with their sons or daughters. The family division last year was the highlight of the tournament, Yanito said.

Yanito said he expects fewer teams this year than last year because there are some kids gone on other events. He said he expects 20-to-25 teams. Registration is open and will continue up to the beginning of play. To register in advance, contact Lindsay Dowd at 435-260-9583, Renee Trout at 435-260-1036, or Conrad Yanito at 435-260-8590. Registration the day of the tournament begins at 8 a.m. at Grand County Middle School, 439 S. 100 East.

The tournament format will vary depending on the number of teams in each division, Yanito said, likely consisting of pool play before a single-elimination bracket. The teams will play half-court with a 20-minute running clock. The first team to score 21 points or the team leading after 20 minutes will be the winner.

Yanito said proceeds from the tournament will go to benefit the GCMS Thunderbirds boys basketball team’s general expenses, such as equipment, uniforms, traveling and hiring officials for home tournaments.

Yanito said he tried to schedule the tournament at a time best for players and spectators. said he hopes the community will come out in support.

“Get out of the heat. Free admission. Have fun supporting GCMS boys basketball,” Yanito said.
