River rafting is never truly safe

Dear Editor,

The article about the June 4 boating accidents in Westwater Canyon might leave readers with the impression that river rafting is safe, especially for those who are experienced. The river is never “safe,” especially at high water, no matter how experienced you are. As in life, there are risks we can control and those we cannot, regardless of how careful we are. We all do our best, private or commercial, to have a great trip. River rafting is great! The river is never truly “safe” no matter the level or condition and must always be respected as such. My thoughts go to all involved. This experience will reverberate through the rest of their lives.
