SITLA not a major source of school revenues

Dear Editor,

As for Utah’s School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA) being the savior of our schools by earning money from mineral leasing, a bit of clarification: SITLA contributed about $50,000 to the Grand County School District last year. Even considering the pitifully low wages we pay these people to teach our children, that is not enough to fund even two teachers.

The environmental community is NOT taking money from your children’s education. If we want to have more money for schools we need to change our tax system. All Utah state income taxes go to fund education. Unfortunately, the taxes are structured so the more children one has, the less he pays in those taxes. This is not a blueprint for school prosperity.
