Red Devils begin season with loss to Wasatch Academy

The Red Devils created chances to score, but only brought one to fruition, losing 3-1 in their season-opening match versus Wasatch Academy on Thursday, March 5 in Moab.

The Red Devils have a large group of at least 35 players, led by a strong senior class, which includes captains Tyson Saggboy, Austin Pyatt and Andrew Hugentobler. Senior Koby Sobremesana scored the lone goal for Grand in the opener and recently signed to play collegiate soccer with Westminster College, while C.J. Hren won boys soccer coach Mick Dunlavey’s Man of the Match.

However, the Red Devils found themselves behind 2-0 at halftime against the Wasatch Academy Tigers before Sobremesana’s goal in the second half. The Tigers also added a goal in the second half for the final outcome.

Yutaka Ito and Daniel Acon scored two of Wasatch Academy’s goals, while the third was an own-goal by Grand.

Dunlavey praised the Red Devils for playing hard until the game was over.

“We never quit and we kept creating scoring chances until the final whistle,” he said.

He said a key for the Red Devils is to believe in themselves and continue to play hard.

“I believe we have the potential to be the top team in our region if we keep believing in our abilities,” he said.

The Red Devils were scheduled to play host to Gunnison on Tuesday, March 10, in a game Dunlavey vowed Grand would take its chances.

“We know that we have the ability to win games if we take our chances,” he said.
