Warren Harding “Sandy” Thurston, 93, passed away on June 14, 2014 at Canyonlands Care Center.
Sandy was born on March 17, 1921 to Chester Arthur and Effie Phoebe Reedy Thurston in Natoma, Kansas. He was one of seven children. He attended a one-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade. And went on to go to high school in Codell, Kansas.
Sandy held many interesting jobs during his life including truck driving, sheep ranching, working as a deputy sheriff, and mining coal and uranium ore. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from his last job, as a electrician for Texas Gulf Potash Company, in 1983.
On June 25, 1939, Warren married Frances Elizabeth Every. Four children were born to this union: Helen Ruth, Arthur Lee, Frank G. and Roger Dean Thurston. Sandy and Frances were married for 65 years and six months before she passed away.
Sandy is survived by his daughter Helen Ruth (Joe) Garcia, and his son Frank (Julianna) Thurston both of Moab, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Frances, two sons Roger and Arthur Thurston and two grandsons, Jeff Thurston and Joe Thurston.
At Sandy’s request, cremation has taken place and a private family service will take place at a later date.
