Red Devils defeat Emery, lose to Gunnison

Boys soccer: The Red Devils split a pair of road games to sit at 3-1 in the early stages of the season, falling 3-0 to Gunnison on Wednesday, March 19 and defeating Emery 6-0 on Thursday, March 20.

Red Devil boys soccer coach Mick Dunlavey said the team started poorly against Emery.

“We did not have the focus or intensity at the beginning of the game,” he said. “ Also, my tactical game plan was not adequate for the style of play Gunnison employed. After playing the first half on our back heel, the team came together at halftime and completely changed the complexion of the game.“

Dunlavey said the Red Devils out-passed and out-shot the Bulldogs, but were unable to make it count on the scoreboard. Dunlavey named junior Duncan Reidhead and senior Layton Call the men of the match for the defensive turnaround in the second half.

The Red Devils rebounded the following day against Emery, taking the frustrations of the Gunnison game, and the frustrations of a bus-breakdown on the way to Castle Dale, out on the Spartans. Junior Koby Sobremesana scored three goals, while Jacob Francis, Austin Pyatt and Sidney Shumway each scored one. The JV team remains unbeaten for the season after beating both Gunnison and Emery. Dunlavey named Rylan Ruggeri the man of the match for his “dominating defensive display.”

The Red Devils were also scheduled to play at home versus Wasatch Academy on Tuesday, March 25. They’re next scheduled to play at North Sevier on Thursday, March 27 and at Manti on Thursday, April 3.

Dunlavey said if the Red Devils play the way they did the second half against Gunnison, they’ll continue to have a successful season.

“We created chance after chance and played with the intensity and skill we have developed since the beginning of the season,” he said. “We frustrated Gunnison at every turn and the score did not reflect the hard work…I have no doubt that if the team continues to play with the confidence they demonstrated in the second half, our season will be very successful.”
