Four Red Devil athletes earn Academic All-State accolades

Four Red Devil seniors earned Academic All-State accolades from the UHSAA for the winter sports season: basketball player Adam Jenkinson, wrestler Jacob Francis and swimmers Jackson Knowles and Treyton Helquist. According to the UHSAA, this award is presented to “recognize those students who have excelled in the classroom as well as in athletic competition.”

“Individuals are selected for this award on the basis of their athletic ability and academic proficiency,” according to the UHSAA. “With over 85,000 students participating in high school activities, this award is the most prestigious honor the UHSAA presents to senior students.”

Jenkinson is currently playing for the Red Devil baseball team and Francis, Knowles and Helquist are running for the Red Devil track and field team. Francis is also playing for the Red Devil soccer team.

Grand County High athletic director Ron Dolphin said having four student-athletes earn the honor is an “immensely” positive reflection on the school.

“We have a great senior class that’s academically sound and athletically talented,” Dolphin said. “To be named Academic All-State, a student-athlete has to be the best of the best both academically and athletically.”

Dolphin said spring sports academic all-state nominations began on Tuesday, March 18 and he planned to nominate about a dozen senior student-athletes for the award.
