Racing in Fruita

The Grand County Running Club competed at the Sweet Heart Run in Fruita, Colo. on Feb. 8.

The Grand County Running Club is a community-based club that provides youth and their families with long-distance running and core training. The club is open to all youth from sixth to 12th grades, regardless of abilities. The club centers around three seasons in which runners train three days per week and compete in regional running events.

“All runners – kids, parents and coaches – enjoyed great weather and great times,” said Trish Hedin, one of the founders of the running club.

Grand County Running Club participants placed in both the 5K and 10K races.

In the 5K race, Ryan Lewis placed first in his age group and in eighth place overall with a time of 21:44. Evan Ellison placed second in his age group and 12th overall with a time of 22:33. Brandi Heywood placed first in her age group and 19th overall with a time of 25:08. Herbert Stash placed third in his age group and 15th overall with a time of 24:36. Tyrese Stash placed fifth in his age group and 72nd overall with a time of 30:22. Josie Wakefield placed seventh in her age group and 114th overall with a time of 36:24. Isaac Ellison placed eighth in his age group and 244th overall with a time of 53:38. Rachel Stenta placed 23rd in her age group and 245th overall with a time of 54:19.

In the 10K race, Cameron Wakefield placed second in his age group and eighth overall with a time of 46:26. Gery Wakefield placed fourth in his age group and 25th overall with a time of 49:51. McKay Wakefield placed fifth in his age group and 36th overall with a time of 52:27. Emmy Heywood placed first in her age group and 38th overall with a time of 52:33. Joe Heywood placed eighth in his age group and 39th overall with a time of 52:35. Dan Stenta placed ninth in his age group and 42nd overall with a time of 54:23.

Registration for the upcoming season of the running club will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24 at the Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center. Registration fees are $25 per youth. The $25 includes coaching, a core trainer, T-shirt and registration fees to regional events.
