Let it burn

Bureau of Land Management (BLM) burned 50 acres of piles from thinned pinyon and juniper near the community of Canyon Terrace south of Monticello on Tuesday, Jan. 27. The project is aimed at reducing the probability of a destructive wildfire on BLM lands adjacent to the private land in Canyon Terrace. The project has the added benefit of preserving and restoring native ponderosa pine stands, and increasing grasses and forbs for wildlife, said Jason Kirks, BLM fire specialist. [Courtesy photo / BLM]
