Burgess Deloy “BD” Howard, age 94, passed away peacefully on Jan. 11, 2014 in Moab.
He is now in the arms of his beloved soul mate and eternal companion Betty Joyce. The two lovers are reunited once again to be together forever.
BD was born in Twin Falls, Idaho on July 23, 1919. He was 94 years old and refused to act his age. He wanted to remain youthful, happy and tease every single person he ever met to get their attention and make them laugh. He always said that people were like books and all you needed to do is open them up and see what you could find.
He married Betty Joyce McDonald in March 1959; their marriage was later sealed in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple on April 14, 1984 for time and all eternity. The two lovebirds were married for over 55 years. Betty preceded BD on April 15, 2010.
He worked as an oil field engineer and supervisor for Baker Hughes Oil Company in Wyoming, after moving there from California in 1959, where he worked and retired after 30 years. Everyone knew Old BD and respected him, as well as liked him. Some feared him because he was so blunt, but to those who know him he was like a drill sergeant who just wanted the best for his family, his work, and his friends. He believed in good honest work and never encouraged complaining or lack of respect. “No one, is your boss!” Supervisor is a better description, but no one is a boss of him or his family!
Dad enjoyed his church with his lovely wife Betty. The two became very active in the LDS church over the years and served the church in many callings including a full time mission in Kirtland, Ohio where they served for two years. They were also temple workers in the Monticello, Utah Temple. They loved their ward in Moab and one of Dad’s reputations was to hand out candies to the little children who came into church. The greatest reward to him was a hug. He got lots of those from everyone! “Love everybody”, he always said.
Dad is survived by a daughter Marlene Ciavarelli, sons, Larry Stephen Howard, Philip Curtis Howard (Ana), Robert Paul Howard (Karrie), 18 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and a whole host of friends that can’t be counted. God rest your amazing soul Dad. You fought the good fight and won.
