Recognizing Community Service

The Moab Chamber of Commerce honored the 2013 business of the year and the 2013 citizen of the year at their annual fall banquet held Nov. 16 at the Red Cliffs Lodge.

“We congratulate this year’s winners and thank them for their contribution in making Moab the best place to live,” said Moab Chamber of Commerce director Jodie Hugentobler.

Aarchway Inn and Zax Restaurant, owned by Mike Bynum, received the award for 2013 business of the year.

“The business of the year award is given to a local business that has made outstanding contributions to our community and is a member of the Moab Chamber of Commerce,” said Jodie Hugentobler, the chamber’s director. “Aarchway Inn and Zax consistently help the community through sponsorships and volunteerism.”

Aarchway Inn hosts the kick-offs for many community events such as, the Skinny Tire Festival, Century Tour and Half Marathon. It also supports the community through sponsorships, such as the the one it gives to the PRCA Canyonlands Rodeo Club.

“Zax is readily available to step up when the Chamber, School District, or Senior Center is in need,” Hugentobler said. “They held a costume drive to collect Halloween costumes for the Foster Children of our community, and have the school spirit promotion, show your school spirit by wearing the red devil colors on Friday and get a special discount at Zax.”

Bynum serves on the hospital board and is involved with the USU Education Foundation

Danette Johnson was honored as the 2013 citizen of the year.

“The citizen of the year is given to citizens who have had a significant impact on the community through volunteer and charitable activities, Hugentobler said.

“Danette is a very active board member of the Moab Free Health Clinic and chair of the Grand County Education Foundation,” Hugentobler said. “For the past seven years she has been a mentor in the Grand Mentoring Program, active in the Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo Club, and volunteers her time with the Moab Sea Devils Swim Team.”
