Two GCHS students named Sterling Scholars

Two Grand County High School students were selected as the Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholar winners: Jessica Pyatt and Mary Rice.

Pyatt competed in visual arts. She is the daughter of Daniel and Yolanda Pyatt. She is a member of the National Honor Society and served as the president of the GCHS’ Art Club.

Rice competed in general scholarship. She is the daughter of Ross and Kate Rice. She participated in several school activities including: debate, government, music, drama and cross-country. She was named GCHS Student of the Year for 2012.

Eleven Grand County High School seniors competed in the Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholars competition at the College of Eastern Utah – USU in Price on Tuesday, March 5.

Sterling Scholars Awards recognize and encourage the pursuit of excellence in scholarship, leadership and citizenship of high school seniors in Utah. Most colleges and universities in Utah offer scholarships to both winners and runners-up.

Grand County High School students chosen as runners-up in their respective categories included: Torrie Lopez, foreign language; Maren Larsen, English; Sarah Quigley, speech and drama; Donna Snow, social science; Nikysha Harmison, science; and Juniper Roman, family, consumer and health sciences.

Other nominees from Grand County High School were Kris Kemp, music; Macrae Olsen, Math; Morning Dove Hansen, trade and technology.
