John Geiger (with Ethan)

– As reported to Meredith Mirrington

John Geiger knows how to play – as well he should – he’s the recreation director for the City of Moab. As you’ll read in his 20 Questions, he’s been a fan of sports and recreation throughout his life and he continuously seeks the balance between work and play in everyday life. And, while he thinks professional surfers are “living the life” – he is beyond content with life as he knows it in Moab with his young son, Ethan, and wife, Faye.

1) What initially brought you to Moab?

An Environmental Education Masters program with Canyonlands Field Institute, and the desert rivers!

2) What do you love most about living in Moab?

I never get tired of the landscape but the community is what really sustains me and my family. We’re fortunate to be surrounded by so many passionate, involved, creative and fun people.

3) What do you dislike about living in Moab?

I suppose there might be something???

4) What is your occupation?

Recreation director for the City of Moab.

5) If you could have any job in the world, what would you most like to do?

Professional surfers seem to have it pretty good, but I’ll stick where I am.

6) Describe a typical day in your life.

Every day is different but usually involves a morning mountain bike ride; breakfast and play time with my son, Ethan, and wife, Faye; plenty of meetings and phone conversations with staff, volunteer coaches and parents; time on the game fields in the evenings; and, hopefully, a little time at night hanging out with my family or playing music.

7) Some people have bumper stickers on their car that reads: I’d Rather be Sailing. What would your bumper sticker read? I’d Rather Be…

Sailing. They have a point.

8) Tell us one thing people don’t usually know about you.

As half of the Boom Boom Room – along with Thatcher Vagts – I DJ house music.

9) In high school, you would have been considered the person most likely to…

Injure himself playing sports.

10) What is your favorite Moab activity?

Running Cat! Watching football at Arlo’s may be a close second.

11) Tell us your favorite non-Moab place to visit.

12) Where can the best cup of coffee in town be found?

Howard at Red Rock gets my vote.

13) What do you consider your greatest achievement in life?

Convincing my wife to marry me.

14) If you were president, what’s the first thing you’d do to make life better in America?

Push for increased funding for education and spearhead major changes in our campaign finance laws.

15) What superhero power would you most like to have?

Invisibility – I need better access to professional sports events.

16) If you could be an animal, what would it be? Why?

Either of my dogs. They have it better than professional surfers.

17) What is your all time favorite movie?

“Raising Arizona”

18) And your all time favorite book?

“It’s Bedtime, Wibbly Pig.” My 3-year-old concurs.

19) If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be? Why?

My grandfather, Harry – there was a lot more I could have learned from him.

20) What is your life philosophy?

Balance. Work hard, but find time to play and enjoy yourself.
